Use a short dark pencil (a golf pencil, for example). It must be able to run under the ankle at the back.
Trace around the foot holding the pencil as shown. You will need a tight trace with the pencil vertical. Trace around the heel bulbs. Mark end of ground contact area on both sides of the hoof. (Shod or unshod) Ground contact area must fit within gel orthotic surface area. |

Now measure your trace at: • The widest point, as shown • The longest ground contact point, as shown. • The longest point including bulbs, as shown. |
