Soft-Ride on the Road

We’re rolling into the dog days of Summer, and for a lot of people that means hitting the road and squeezing in as many adventures as possible before the weather turns cold again.

Like many of you, travel is on the schedule this summer at Soft-Ride. We’ve been on the road from Oregon to North Carolina and a bunch of places in between. We’ve been meeting up with vets and farriers at clinics and conferences learning the newest techniques and recommendations for keeping horses sound. We are also getting amazing feedback about how Soft-Rides are helping horses return to work after injuries. Read on to see where we’ve been and where we’re headed this summer in our “Soft-Ride on the Road” newsletter!

Conference Report

Here’s a brief overview of the most recent events we’ve attended and what was discussed.

AAEP Focus on Podiatry

We spent June 22-24 in Lexington, Kentucky at the American Association of Equine Practitioners’ Focus on Podiatry conference. This was a cutting-edge event for veterinarians with a concentration on corrective shoeing, trimming, and hoof alignment. Many of the speakers discussed lameness evaluation and treatment using accommodative devices like Soft-Ride’s family of products.

Ronald Alder nailed a pair of SoftRider Gel Max shoes on a presentation horse and illustrated the breakover change with radiographs. He discussed several important elements SoftRider shoes use to help alleviate hoof and distal limb strain including:
  • Using a center loading device for weight and leverage redistribution
  • Allowing the sole to load and unload on a supported firm platform
  • Altering breakover angles to diminish hyperextension of ligaments and tendons in the lower leg

From the Ground Up Conference

On July 6-8 we attended the From the Ground Up conference presented by Northwest Equine Performance in Mulino, Oregon. This conference focused on promoting collaboration between veterinarians and farriers for the good of the horse. Top farriers and veterinarians from the US and Europe discussed how to treat the hooves and distal limbs for the overall good of the horse. Topics included:
  • Accommodative trimming and shoeing- including using SoftRider Arena shoes on dressage, eventing, and jumping horses to help prolong the career of the horses.
  • Strategies and limitations of nerve blocking horses- including when to use nerve block and when to rely on preventative care options like Soft-Ride Boots
  • How farrier and vet work in top performance horses such as the US Olympic Team horses helps care for the horse holistically
