Last week, we explored why therapeutic support begins with comfort. (read part 1 here) We discussed how the design elements and materials of Soft Ride Comfort Boots and Deep Gel Orthotics helps support horses during periods of stall rest and acute injury by cushioning the foot, encouraging more physiologic weight distribution, supporting the frog and palmar structures, and working alongside the hoof's natural circulatory mechanisms. For many horses recovering from conditions such as acute laminitis or other painful hoof injuries, that ability to stand more comfortably is an important first step on the road to recovery.

One of the most encouraging moments for any horse owner, veterinarian, or farrier is seeing a horse begin to move with a little more ease. | Movement asks a great deal of the equine foot. With every step, the hoof absorbs impact, supports the horse's body weight, and transfers energy through the bones, tendons, ligaments, and soft tissues of the lower limb. Healthy tissues are designed to manage these forces efficiently. However, horses experiencing discomfort often change the way they move. They may shorten their stride, alter the timing of breakover, land unevenly, or shift their weight away from painful areas. These adaptations are understandable, but they can increase stress on other structures within the hoof and limb and contribute to discomfort if they become concentrated within already sensitive structures.
Soft Ride Deep Gel Orthotics were developed to help manage these ground reaction forces while supporting the horse's natural biomechanics. Made from a resilient urethane gel, the orthotic allows the hoof to settle into the material under load while maintaining enough depth and density to continue supporting the foot throughout the stride.
One of the goals of therapeutic support is to improve comfort enough that the horse can return to more natural movement patterns. If the hoof were to bottom out against the harder surface beneath the orthotic, the cushioning effect would be lost and impact forces would be transmitted more directly into sensitive tissues. Instead, the orthotic deforms in a controlled manner, absorbing and redistributing concussion while maintaining supportive contact with the frog and palmar structures of the foot throughout the loading cycle.
The urethane gel also contains no air pockets that can collapse over time. As a result, the orthotic does not remain permanently compressed after repeated loading. It retains the resilience and supportive depth necessary to continue cushioning the hoof throughout rehabilitation and supportive care. The density and weight of the orthotic are intentional aspects of its design, selected to withstand the demands placed on the foot of a 1,000-pound horse while providing meaningful protection and support.
By absorbing concussion while maintaining structural support, the orthotic works with the anatomy of the equine foot rather than against it. | The deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) is closely connected to the mechanics of the equine foot. Passing behind the navicular bone before attaching to the underside of the coffin bone, it influences how forces move through the lower limb during both standing and motion.
In horses recovering from laminitis and certain other hoof conditions, thoughtful support of the palmar aspect of the foot may help reduce unnecessary strain on this important structure. The structures within the hoof work continuously to manage loading forces, adapt to changing terrain, and support the horse's body weight. During recovery, those structures may already be operating under increased strain.
When horses move with discomfort, compensatory movement patterns can increase fatigue within the hoof and lower limb. Toe dragging, uneven loading, shortened strides, and altered breakover may place additional demands on tissues attempting to heal.
