Why Ventilate the Boots?

When a horse wears a hoof boot for hours at a time, we naturally think about what is happening underneath the foot. Is the hoof supported? Is the horse comfortable? Is the boot helping reduce concussion?
There is another important question that is easy to overlook:
What is happening inside the boot?
A healthy hoof needs an environment that allows appropriate airflow and prevents excessive moisture from remaining against the foot. This becomes particularly important during warm weather, extended wear, travel, rehabilitation, if there is damage to the hoof wall or white line, or anytime a horse is spending considerable time in his boots.
That is why ventilation is intentionally built into the Soft Ride Comfort Boot. The medial and lateral ventilation openings allow air to move around the hoof, helping heat and moisture escape while the boot provides support and cushioning.
For a boot that may be worn for extended periods, ventilation isn't simply a comfort feature. It is an important part of creating a healthy environment for the hoof. |

| Heat: Why Does It Matter to the Hoof?
The equine hoof contains a remarkable system of living tissues protected by the hard outer hoof capsule. Among the most important are the laminae, which connect the hoof wall to the coffin bone and help suspend the bone within the hoof capsule.
When those structures are injured, the consequences can be serious.
During laminitis, the attachment between the hoof capsule and coffin bone becomes weakened. In severe cases, the coffin bone can rotate or sink within the hoof capsule, producing what horse owners commonly call founder.
Heat is an important clinical sign to pay attention to because an abnormally warm or hot hoof can occur with inflammation in the foot. AAEP lists increased hoof temperature, along with a stronger digital pulse, shifting weight, reluctance to turn, and a characteristic stance among signs that can be seen with laminitis.
There is also a direct thermal concern with sufficiently high temperatures. Research into thermal effects on the equine foot has demonstrated that external heat can increase laminar tissue temperature and alter blood flow within the digit. Extremely high temperatures can cause thermal injury to living hoof tissues.
This is especially relevant during the summer months when horses may encounter very hot surfaces. Asphalt, concrete, and trailer floors can become considerably hotter than the surrounding air. A hoof standing on a hot surface for an extended period is receiving heat directly through the foot.

| What Is Road Founder?
Summer travel also brings up another condition that horse owners may have heard about: road founder.
Road founder is a form of laminitis associated with excessive concussion from prolonged work on hard surfaces. UC Davis and the American College of Veterinary Surgeons both identify excessive work or concussion on hard surfaces as a potential cause of laminitis, commonly referred to as road founder.
The term can sound confusing because “founder” is often associated with dietary or metabolic problems. In road founder, the concern is the repeated mechanical stress placed on the feet.

| Moisture: The Other Side of the Equation
Heat is only part of the story.
Moisture matters too.
The word “hydration” can sometimes make hoof care sound like a discussion about how much water a horse should drink. Here, we are talking about something different: the amount of moisture present in the hoof tissues themselves.
Hoof horn naturally contains moisture, and its physical properties change as its moisture content changes. Research has shown that the stiffness and mechanical behavior of equine hoof horn are affected by how much water is present in the tissue.
The concern with a boot is prolonged wetness around the hoof—not normal moisture within healthy hoof tissue.
A horse can introduce moisture into a boot in several ways. Sweating can accumulate around the hoof and pastern during warm weather. Water can enter during turnout, bathing, wet footing, or other activities. If that water has nowhere to go, the hoof can remain wet for an extended period.
That is where ventilation becomes valuable.
The ventilation openings in Soft Ride Comfort Boots allow air to circulate around the hoof so that moisture has an opportunity to escape. The boots are designed to breathe rather than create a completely enclosed space around the foot.
Completely closed boot designs can hold heat and moisture inside the boot because there is little opportunity for air exchange or drainage. Although avoiding the need to remove a boot and clear it out may seem convenient, maintaining a healthy hoof environment is worth the extra attention. Persistent moisture can soften hoof tissue and create conditions that contribute to problems such as thrush. |

| How Does Thrush Happen?
Thrush is a degenerative condition affecting the frog of the hoof and is associated with bacterial infection. It commonly produces a foul odor, black discharge, and a soft or unhealthy frog. Lameness can occur when the condition progresses into deeper, sensitive tissues.
Wet, dirty conditions are recognized as contributing factors, although thrush is not simply a disease of “dirty feet.” Hoof conformation, trimming, exercise, and the ability of the frog and surrounding structures to naturally clean themselves can also influence a horse's risk.
This is another reason airflow inside a horse hoof boot matters. A boot should provide the support your horse needs while allowing the hoof environment to remain as healthy as possible. |

| Ventilation Without Giving Up Support
One of the useful aspects of Soft Ride Comfort Boots is that ventilation is incorporated into the boot without compromising the Deep Gel™ Orthotic underneath the hoof.
The ventilation openings are located along the sides of the boot beneath the medial and lateral straps. Air can move around the hoof while the orthotic continues to provide its intended support.
Even the narrower orthotic designs are constructed with drainage in mind. The bumpers surrounding the orthotic do not form a sealed “cup” around the hoof that is designed to hold water. Water has an opportunity to drain rather than remaining pooled underneath the foot.
This matters because a supportive hoof environment needs to address more than what is happening mechanically beneath the hoof. The environment around the hoof deserves consideration, too. |

| Routine Debris Removal: An Important Part of Boot Care
Ventilation is only one part of maintaining a healthy boot environment. Regularly clearing out debris is equally important.
During normal use, dirt, bedding, manure, and other material can work their way underneath the Deep Gel™ Orthotic. The boot's construction allows this debris to move beneath the orthotic rather than remaining directly against the bottom of the horse's hoof.
That doesn't mean the debris should be left there. |

How to Clear the Boots
|
|
For routine maintenance:
|
|
|
Remove the Deep Gel™ Orthotic. Take the orthotic out of the outer boot shell so you can inspect the area underneath.

|
|
|
Dump and brush out the debris. Remove dirt, bedding, manure, and other material that has accumulated inside the boot and beneath the orthotic.
|
|
|
|
Inspect the hoof and the boot. This is a convenient time to look at the hoof for anything unusual and check the boot and orthotic for wear or damage.
|
|
|
|
Reassemble the boot. Once the debris has been removed, put the orthotic back into the boot correctly so it is ready for continued use.
|
|
|
We call this routine debris removal because it is different from washing the boots. The boots should still be periodically washed with mild soap and water, particularly before storage or following prolonged exposure to urine. The components should be allowed to dry completely before they are reassembled or stored.

| Why Does the Debris Under the Orthotic Matter?
There is an important mechanical reason to keep up with this simple step.
As material accumulates beneath the orthotic, it can gradually change the position of the hoof inside the boot. The hoof may be pushed farther back within the boot as debris builds up.
That can affect the position of the hoof relative to the boot's rockered forward breakover.
The rockered design is intended to help the hoof move through breakover more easily. Keeping the hoof positioned correctly within the boot allows the horse to benefit from the geometry of that design as intended.
So, removing debris is about more than cleanliness. It helps maintain the fit, positioning, and function of the boot. |

| Good Boot Design Considers the Whole Environment

Ventilation may seem like a small detail when you look at a hoof boot, but the environment inside the boot matters.
During hot weather, airflow helps prevent unnecessary heat from accumulating around the foot. During wet conditions, it gives moisture a way to escape. Regular removal of debris helps keep the hoof properly positioned within the boot and allows you to inspect both the hoof and the boot.
